Inmates from the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre were once again given the opportunity to spend the day with their family and friends at the Lay Magistrates of Jamaica, Kingston Chapter Family Day 2019.
Inmates were greeted with hugs and kisses from their children and other relatives presenting food and Christmas cards. The inmates expressed gratitude at the opportunity to spend time with their children. “ The opportunity to see my daughters is everything, words can’t explain how happy I am right now. Seeing them gives me hope,” an inmate explained.
The Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre Christmas Reunion is the brainchild of the Mr. Steadman Fuller Custos of Kingston. 2019 marks the 9th staging of the event. Mr Fuller explained that the aim of the programme is to promote rehabilitation through connection.
“The aim of it is really to promote family connection and rehabilitation. The families and children of inmates need these kinds of avenues to connect with their loved ones which in the end will help them rehabilitate.” Fuller said
Throughout the day , children were provided with materials to make Christmas cards for loved ones . The adults were able to access health related Services such as free HIV,Blood sugar and pressure test ,while the children were treated to rides on slides ,swings and bounce-a-bouts. Entertainment was provided by Eagles Marching band.
Booths we’re mounted by the lions club of St. Andrew, St. John ambulance , the National ST/HIV programme and the Kingston Bookshop.
The event was sponsored by the Department of Correctional Services, the NCB Foundation. Island Grill, Kingston Bookshop and the Lay Magistrates of Jamaica (Kingston Chapter).
