The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is pleased to report the 2020 CSEC results for wards and inmates under its care. One Hundred and thirteen from a total of 117 persons registered for the CSEC subjects sat exams in July 2020.
The candidates; which comprised 90 inmates and 23 wards sat 13 subjects including: Food and Nutrition; Mathematics; Economics; Principles of Business and Accounts; Geography, Human & Social Biology; Social Studies; Family Life Resource; Office Procedures; English Language and Literature.
The pass rate for the 2020 sitting increased 3% over the 2019 examination results for a total of 69% candidates passing at least one subject. Of note 100% passes were achieved in the subject areas of English Literature and Geography; 90% of candidates achieved passes in Office Administration, 86% in Principles of Business; 83% in Food and Nutrition and 69 and 68% achieved passes in Principles of Account and Human & Social Biology respectively.
The DCS has a robust educational system divided into three categories: remedial studies, intermediate and advanced education. The rehabilitation through education programme facilitates inmates and children from the most basic literacy level to external examinations such as the CSEC Examinations. For the past five years, the department has maintained an above 60 percent pass rate in the CSEC examinations.
